The Four Sounds

Click and learn: select one of the four sounds and see the simplified wiring for that switch position.

Seymour Duncan’s P-Rail pickup combines the hum-cancelling effect of a humbucker with the appeal of two signature single coil sounds: a P-90 and a Rail Blade.

Using a four position rotary switch, you can get four distinct sounds out of the P-Rail:

Understanding the P-Rail Pickup

A humbucker with two very special single coils: a P-90 and a Rail Blade.

Seymour Duncan’s P-Rail pickup combines the hum-cancelling effect of a humbucker with the appeal of two signature single coil sounds: a P-90 and a Rail Blade.

Using a four position rotary switch, you can get four distinct sounds out of the P-Rail:

  • Humbucker in series for high output
  • Humbucker parallel
  • Single Coil P-90
  • Single Rail Blade

You can see the simplified wiring as well as the detailed version for the actual soldering of the rotary switch above.

If you use two P-Rail pickups in a Les Paul style wiring, you would (theoretically) get 24 different sounds:

  • The Les Paul toggle offers three options:
    • Neck only (4 options)
    • Bridge only (4 options)
    • Both pickups (additional 4x4 = 16 options)
